With the Taipei Deaflympics set to begin on Sept. 5, everyone has been speculating on how many medals the Chinese Taipei delegation will be able to obtain at this year’s Games. At the last Deaflympics, Chinese Taipei obtained 9 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals; this year, with home turf advantage, people are predicting a medal count of at least 12 Gold Medals.

At the 2005 Melbourne Deaflympics, the Chinese Taipei delegation participated in 6 sport events, winning 9 Gold Medals, and was ranked 5th overall. This year, the Chinese Taipei delegation consists of 159 athletes competing in 16 sport events; the delegation’s goal is to win at least 12 Gold Medals, with at least 2 in Taekwondo. Chinese Taipei medal hopefuls include Chiu-Mei Ho (Tennis), Li-Hsiao Chang (Bowling), Ching-Feng Lu (Karate), Lan-Feng Chen (Athletics), Chih-Hsuan Wen (Table Tennis), and Jung-Tsung Yang (Table Tennis).

Li-Hsiao Chang, the Bowling ace of the Chinese Taipei delegation and winner of 3 Gold and 2 Silver medals at the last Deaflympics, is a bowling aficionado who owned at one time 80 bowling balls.

Ching-Feng Lu, men’s 80 kg karate Gold medalist at last year’s Toulouse World Deaf Martial Arts Championships and men’s 75 kg karate Gold medalist at the Invitational Games for the Deaf last November, is also among the Chinese Taipei athletes favored to take Gold.
